July 2010: Junior SmokeJumpers Program

Meet a real smokejumper, learn about smokejumping, and become an official Junior Smokejumper with hands-on activities covering fire suppression, fire training, fire tools, parachute techniques, and plant identification. This free program is open to children ages 6-12 Monday-Saturday. Located on Dunraven Street, sign up begins at 9:30am and program runs 10:00am - 12:00pm,

July 2010: Wild West Yellowstone Rodeo

Born in the past to ease the cowboys boredom, todays rodeos are pure excitement! Bareback Riding, Team Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Breakaway Roping and Bull Riding are just some of the scheduled events. Performances are at 8:00 pm each night and will be held at the Rodeo arena just 4 miles west of town. Join the fun!

July 3, 2010 : The 1959 Earthquake and the Human Factor Refuge Point

Come join Gallatin National Forest Guide and Madison River Canyon Earthquake Survivor John Owen. Come with John and revisit the high ground where 250 Earthquake survivors sought safety on the night of August 17, 1959. Programs at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.

July 4, 2010: Celebrating America

Our Fourth of July celebration this year includes some "down home" fun--outdoor barbeque benefit for the fire department, parade, music and fireworks (conditions permitting). Parade line up at 5:30 and parade starts at 6:00. Fireworks start at 10:00 pm.


July 7, 2010 : Who's Eating the Trees?

Environmental Education “ Beaver Creek Campground Loop C--Identification and Treatment of Forest, Trees, Disease and Pests. Join Forest Service Guide Libby Young with activities enjoyable for both big and little children. Time: 1:00 PM.

July 11, 2010: What kind of Rock is this?

Earthquake Lake. Meet Gallatin National Forest Aide Ashley Fox for a special presentation and discussion of the geology of the Madison River Canyon. Ashley will focus on the 1959 Earthquake and its results in the surrounding area. Questions, discussions and observations are encouraged. Time: 1:00 PM.

July 11, 2010: FREE Fly-Casting Clinic

Seminars and Presentations by Bob Jacklin every Sunday, during the summer, Bob will conduct a free fly-casting clinic in West Yellowstone. Meet at Jacklin's Fly shop at 7:30PM. Fly rod outfits are available free of charge. If you'd like some help with your casting or would like to start learning, this is a great place to start. Bob also is available during the later part of the year for other appearances.

July 14, 2010 : Turn Off the Lights!!

"Guided Night Walk and Talk” Building Destruction. Visit Gallatin National Forest Guide Jeff Bowen's discussion of the impact of light pollution on your National Forest including a focus on the night of the August 17, 1959 Earthquake and its effects on the Madison River Canyon. Availability is on Wednesday night. Time: 10:00 PM.

 July 18, 2010: The Wonders of Nature

"Cabin Creek Campground Trailhead.'' Enjoy a three hour hike on the Cabin Creek Trail with Forest Service Ranger Dale Butler exploring the wonders of nature and geologic features viewed from this beautiful trail.
Difficulty level: easy to moderate. Time: 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

July 24, 2010: Yellowstone Historic Center Heritage Celebration

Join the Yellowstone Historic Center for our 9th annual Heritage Celebration at the historic Union Pacific Dining Lodge. Enjoy dinner, a live and silent auction, and music by cowboy entertainers Larry Gibson and John Westbrook. This year's theme is honoring the 75th anniversary of air service into West Yellowstone. 1930's travel attire is encouraged.
